The Blackberry Cask Smash is a freshly squeezed, potent mixture of "garden-picked" ingredients that are perfectly in tune with a trending cocktail-culture revolution; both a revival and shift in modern mixology: Garden To Glass Cocktails.

What Are Garden To Glass Cocktails?

Today, most of those in the know owe this "only fresh ingredients" approach of mixing cocktails to Dale DeGroff, aka King Cocktail. Dale is an American bartender and author who catapulted into prominence after working in New York at Rockefeller Center's Rainbow Room from 1987 to 1999. It was there where he pioneered a gourmet approach to recreating the classic cocktails.

With Mr. DeGroff's brilliant yet appropriately simplistic techniques, he harnessed the momentum of using classic recipes, modern innovations, crafter guidelines and preparation procedures that have all become the standard protocol of today at thousands of fine cocktail bars, world-wide.

DeGroff has since been credited with reviving the profession of craft cocktail bartending and elevating mixology to the status of an elite, sought-after culinary art.

This Week's Cocktail Recipe...

As per usual with our BarBack Tool Company recipes, you will find that The Blackberry Cask Smash is a potent, multi-liquor, high quality cocktail complete with fresh juice squeezes and perfect garnishes throughout.

We are also sharing a second secret recipe: our brown sugar simple syrup. As one might imagine, we use The O-Rig Tool whenever its needed to produce excellent juices and garnishes for our cocktails. In addition, we applaud and appreciate all of our fans who have wisely adopted The O-Rig BarBack Tool as their regular beverage service tool.

With no further ado, enjoy mixing (and sipping) this velvety-liquid amalgamation we call: The Blackberry Cask Smash. As always, pour and garnish responsibly.

For this recipe, please gather the following items:

  • An O-Rig BarBack Tool 
  • A pint mixing glass
  • A Boston shaker tin
  • A Hawthorne drink strainer and a fine screen strainer
  • One wooden muddler
  • One coupe cocktail glass. A wine glass or a martini glass will also suffice.
  • Makers Mark 112.5 proof straight bourbon whiskey, cask strength
  • Aromatic bitters
  • Brown sugar simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • Fresh whole lemon
  • Fresh whole orange
  • Six large fresh blackberries
  • Fresh green sage leaves on sprig
  • Ice

  • The BarBack Tool Company's Blackberry Cask Smash Cocktail Recipe

    *This cocktail is shaken and double strained into a chilled, coupe cocktail glass.

    1. Using your BarBack garnish knife, slice the lemon into 8 wedges and squeeze one wedge each into empty pint mixing glass. Place the remaining wedges aside for later use. 

    2. Add 3/4 ounces each of: brown sugar simple syrup and 3 dashes of aromatic bitters

    3. Add 2 ounces of Makers Mark Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    5. Add blackberries to mixture and gently press 4-5 times with muddler, thus extracting the juice but not wasting time to unnecessarily and repeatedly muddle.

    6. Next, fill glass, pour entire mix into the Boston shaker, seal with mixing glass and vigorously shake for 30 seconds.

    7. Next, double-strain the mixture into the chilled glass using both the Hawthorne strainer and the fine screen strainer.

    8. Using your BarBack Tool's patented peeler, shave a nice ribbon of the orange peel directly over-top of the drink, then twist the peel and place on rim of coupe. This will spray a lovely mist of the orange peel's oils over the surface which will enhance the aromatics and taste of the drink. 

    9. Lastly, "smack" one sprig of fresh green sage leaves over the glass to release their fragrant oils, and balance it decoratively along the rim of the glass.

    10.The finished pour level should be two straw widths from the rim of the glass.

    11. Enjoy!

    The BarBack Tool Company's Brown Sugar Simple Syrup Recipe

    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup cane sugar
    • 1.75 cups water


    1. Add sugar and water to a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, and boil for about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes, still stirring occasionally.

    2. You can then pour the syrup into a plastic squeeze bottle or a glass bottle with a pour spout.

    Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks
